YWCA Tri-County Area’s June 2 Gun Violence Awareness Rally receives grant from On The Table, Philadelphia Foundation
YWCA Tri-County Area is one of 50 Delaware Valley-area organizations selected for $1,000 “Activate” grants through On The Table Philly, a regional project designed to bring people together to discuss local topics key to the community, and to transform ideas into action plans.
YW’s On The Table project will host a rally Tuesday, June 2, in Norristown – which is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. The time and location of the rally will be announced closer to the date. Modeled after a rally that took place in October 2019 in Pottstown, the Gun Violence Awareness Rally will call attention to the affects of gun violence in the community, will offer ideas designed to minimize gun violence, and will honor those lost to gun violence.
On The Table grant recipients began their community conversations in 2019, when nearly 6,000 people throughout the region gathered around more than 460 tables to discuss community issues and offered solutions and action plans. This year’s grants focused in general on civic participation.
On the Table Philly initiative has been hosted for the past three years by Philadelphia Foundation, one of 11 community foundations across the U.S. participating in On the Table. The conversations are part of a national initiative funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to create a culture of civic engagement.
Today, YWCA Tri-County Area remains a leader in advocating for girls, women, and families as an education-based organization providing quality programs and services designed to support and enrich the community.
Advocacy projects include annual participation in YWCA USA’s signature campaigns, Stand Against Racism and Week Without Violence; anti-bias training open to the community; and equity in education.
Support for YW3CA’s advocacy programming will help break down barriers and begin conversations surrounding racial and social justice and the empowerment of women and girls. In 2020, YW3CA’s advocacy efforts will celebrate women’s suffrage and the importance of voting, ensure that local residents are counted through the 2020 Census, take a Stand Against Racism, and promote a violence-free society.
