The U.S. Department of Education announced 95 finalists in the Rethink Adult Ed Challenge, a $750,000 competition to advance pre-apprenticeships. Selected by an expert review panel, YWCA Tri-County Area is thrilled to be one of those finalists, having the opportunity to access resources and support that will enable our continued thought leadership, innovation, barrier-breaking, and re-thinking of adult education in order to empower the people we serve.
Breaking Down Barriers
Many adult learners face barriers to accessing apprenticeships. Pre-apprenticeships break down these obstacles by equipping learners with the knowledge and skills they need to enter and succeed in apprenticeships — which can expand access to career opportunities.
The Rethink Adult Ed Challenge received 203 submissions across a range of industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, and technology. Entrants represented 44 states, as well as Guam and the District of Columbia. The finalists hail from 32 states and two territories, and include higher education institutions, local educational agencies, community and faith-based organizations, and correctional facilities. As a finalist, YWCA Tri-County Area is invited to join Stage 2 and compete for $750,000 in prizes, as well as contribute innovative learning and training resources to a body of knowledge for the wider adult education community.
The YWCA Adult Education Model
Adult education at YWCA Tri-County Area’s Education and Training Center (ETC) empowers adult learners in building a strong foundation for workplace success. Our instructors are educated, experienced, and supportive – ready to help people reach their professional goals, one step at a time. It’s our mission to treat every one of our students with dignity & respect.
ETC offers FREE:
- Adult Basic Education and high school equivalency classes. For adults who have left high school, earning a PA Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma increases the chances of earning a living wage, or qualifying for further education. Through YW’s adult education classes, adult learners can improve basic academic skills and prepare to take the GED or HiSET exam.
- English as a Second Language/Civics classes to improve skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening in English while learning more about U.S. culture and lifestyle.
- Individual tutoring for focused learning in math and reading.
Each student receives personal attention and ongoing support in setting education and job goals, and in identifying and reducing any obstacles that may get in the way of success (transportation, childcare, etc.).
